Jeremy Cole's Bio

Jeremy Cole is a long-time user of PHP, Perl, and, of course, MySQL. He started working with MySQL in 1998, where he used it on various web projects. After participating in the public MySQL mailing lists for some time, he applied for a position at MySQL AB, and was accepted. He has worked for MySQL AB since July of 2000, making him one of the longest-employed in the company.

In the past nearly four years working for MySQL AB, he has worked on the documentation team, the core development team, and most recently heading up the training team. Jeremy is currently Training and Consulting Manager for MySQL AB, where he leads a worldwide team of full-time trainers and consultants. He would claim that his strongest skills are with PHP, Perl, MySQL, Apache, and Linux, but he is always up for new challenges.

On a personal note, Jeremy enjoys photography, cooking, and spending lots of time with his wife Adrienne, and on the geeky side, GPS, collecting databases (he has been known to hoard many gigabytes of seemingly useless data), and making good use of his Jeep Wrangler. He is currently living in northern Ohio, in a small town called Streetsboro, just southeast of Cleveland, where he works from his home office. You can find his personal web site at jcole.us, and you can contact him by email at <jeremy [at] flightstats.us>.

Inspiration for FlightStats

FlightStats was created first and foremost as a demonstration application for MySQL. It solves some needs that we have in the MySQL Training department for sample data, and is overall useful as a somewhat large sample database.

Many people have helped me to make FlightStats what it is today. Most people have just looked at it and suggested things, but there are, as always, some notable people:

  • Adrienne, for her patience as I work on silly projects.
  • Andrew Mays, for his ongoing help and support with design issues, for testing things, and for being a great friend.
  • Jeremy Zawodny, for his enthusiasm and his shared interest in flying in general.
  • Eric Bergen, for his almost daily testing and feedback.
  • Robert Cole, my brother and now a long-time tester of FlightStats
  • Jason Englehardt, a good friend and another long-time tester.
  • Akron LUG, for their enthusiasm and interest in FlightStats during my LUG talks about MySQL.
  • Cleveland LUG, for their enthusiasm, interest, and appreciation for fine Finnish vodka chocolates.
  • HP OpenVMS Bootcamp and HP Encompass User Group Chicago, for their enthusiasm, interest, and for their putting up with my knowing nothing about VMS.
